The Theory & Philosophy Summer School will be held in Blackwater Castle in the village of Castletownroche, Co Cork. The Castle is a 12 th century building on a site rich with archaeology and history. Stone Age tools from the Early Mesolithic period (approx. 6,500BC); Bronze Age artIfacts dating from 1500 to 500 BC; Fulachtaí Fia (cooking pits) and remnants of the Iron Age fort of Dun Cruadha have all been found in the locality. The Castle is also home to a Sheela na Gig , an ancient Celtic symbol of feminine fertility, and also to an ancient Holy Well.
The Theory & Philosophy Summer School activities, including all lectures & seminars, will be held in the castle and the adjoining courtyard garden apartments. The lecture and seminar rooms are fully equipped, and there will be internet access. There is also a library as well as several quiet study spaces in the castle. The castle, accommodations, and school facilities are less than 5 minutes walk from the village of Castletownroche, which has a range of shops and services including cafes, bars and shops. Blackwater Castle is situated in the middle of beautiful countryside and by the Blackwater river, a popular centre for forest and mountain walks.
